Jude Law seems to be one of the most versatile actors in Hollywood…he’s played a multitude of roles and, to his credit, he seems to make each one very distinct from those that came before him. For example, he played a surprise villain in the hit film Captain Marvel. Jude Law is proud of the Marvel villain he brought to life, but he has some regrets, saying in a recent interview with Variety: “I wish I could have had a little more fun with this role.”
Before expressing these regrets, Jude Law expressed how much he loved playing the villain Yon-Rogg, saying, “It was, for me, the pinnacle of Marvel.” Regarding the studio, he noted that “I don’t think they could get much more” from his mentor-turned-heel character. Still, he “wanted to lean more into the humor,” and he went on to talk about how he wished he could have played the character differently and how uncomfortable his goofy costume really was.
While Jude Law pointed out that Captain Marvel “It was a really good experience,” he continued, describing exactly how he thought his character could have been portrayed with a little more humor. “I wanted it to be more arched,” he said. This actually makes sense, because the Yon-Rogg we saw on screen seemed to have exactly two gears: stern mentor and screaming jerk.
Beyond the changes Jude Law wanted to make to his Captain Marvel character, he also had a complaint shared by many MCU stars: namely that the costumes they have to wear are deeply uncomfortable. “These suits are difficult to put on because they are made of thick rubber,” he said. His futuristic uniform probably would have been uncomfortable no matter what, but he went on to describe how the discomfort was heightened by his stunt training.
“You go to stunt camp for a few months, where you do all these fight rehearsals and learn how to do all that stuff,” he said. But as soon as Jude Law put on his Marvel character’s clothes, he realized that the thick rubber suit hampered his flexibility: “I can’t touch my toes!” Before filming, it left him with a troubling question: “How am I going to do all that with this thing?” »
Jude Law’s struggles with his Marvel costume finally had a happy ending: “You understand,” he said. It’s hard to deny that he learned how to use that rubber suit very well, leading to some very memorable fight scenes in Captain Marvel. As he returned via flashbacks in The wondersthe sheer discomfort of the costume might explain why we haven’t seen future appearances from Yon-Rogg. If Law decides to return once again, his character could make for a fun wild card as the MCU continues to explore its cosmic limits.
While we really enjoyed the movie, Jude Law’s complaints about his Captain Marvel character seem perfectly valid… other villains like Loki and Agatha have proven that MCU villains can be menacing while still being very funny. Of course, given the historical failure of The wondersthe chances of his character returning to the big screen seem slimmer than ever. However, with rumor of a Marvel reboot right around the corner, it’s still possible that the return of Law’s memorable misogynistic heel is closer than any of us think.
