Pakistani runners shine in the New York City Marathon with 12 of them finishing in less than four hours Up trends

KARACHI: Pakistani runners showed an impressive performance in the 2024 New York City Marathon, one of the biggest and most challenging courses in the world, with 12 runners finishing the race in less than four hours.

Denmark’s Elahi emerged as the fastest Pakistani, finishing the marathon in an impressive time of three hours, 26 minutes and 50 seconds.

In second place was Rufi Shehzada, who finished the race with a time of 3:32:22, while Pakistani-American Babar Ghias finished with a time of 3:38:53. Other notable performances in less than four hours included Amar Mumtaz, Prem Kumar, and Rehman Azhar.

Meanwhile, Khawla Ahmed, a Norwegian-Pakistani runner, was the fastest woman from Pakistan, finishing with a commendable time of 3:43:02.

She was followed by Maheen Sheikh and Kawkab Sarwar, completing the top three places for Pakistani women in the marathon.

This year’s New York City Marathon saw 36 Pakistani runners, both local and foreign nationals, competing alongside thousands from around the world.

The unit included Pakistani Americans, as well as Pakistani expatriates from Norway, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, and Saudi Arabia.

In the elite category for men, Dutch runner Abdi Naji took first place, finishing the course in two hours, seven minutes and 39 seconds. Kenyans Evans Chebet and Albert Korir finished second and third respectively.

In addition, Kenya’s Sheila Chepkirui topped the women’s elite category with a time of 2:24:35, followed by compatriots Helen Obiri and Vivian Cheruiyot.
