One of the reasons why Deadpool and Wolverine has been so successful is that Ryan Reynolds is very funny… a natural comedian who always gives “maximum effort” to his on-screen punchlines. After seeing him play the clown in role after role, we always thought he’d be just as fun off-screen. But one famous neighbor doesn’t think so: Martha Stewart recently appeared on the show Free rent game show and said Ryan Reynolds is “not that funny in real life.”
Martha Stewart on Ryan Reynolds
The context is that he was asked to predict which celebrities the show’s interviewees thought would be fun to hang out with. She quickly responded that her friend Snoop Dogg should be on the list, but then brought up the Deadpool and Wolverine star. According to Stewart, Ryan Reynolds is “not that funny” and instead “very serious” when the cameras aren’t rolling.
Even with the full context, Stewart’s comments seem hilarious and mean-spirited, although we expected no less from the legendary and brutal celebrity. After naming Snoop Dogg as a celebrity the public would like to spend time with, she brought up her neighbor without any prompting. βHe’s probably on the list just because he covers up in his movies and you don’t see his face β is Ryan Reynolds one of them?β she asked about the fun addition to the MCU.
Who would Martha Stewart like to spend time with?
After that, Martha Stewart mentioned that her own celebrity choices would have been Brad Pitt and George Clooney because “I’d like to hang out with those guys.” When Bilt CEO Ankur Jain brought up Taylor Swift, Stewart admitted that she was only thinking about men, stating that “Taylor Swift is adorable.” She then gave a personalized ranking of the top three including Taylor Swift, Snoop Dogg and George Clooney, the latter replacing Ryan Reynolds (“I would take Ryan out,” she said).
Eventually, the conversation returned to Stewart’s thoughts that Ryan Reynolds wasn’t funny and she expanded on her previous comments. She claimed that “he’s a good actor” and someone who “can act funny, but he’s not funny.” She then speculated that “maybe he could be funny again” before expressing that she was going to “get in trouble” for dunking her famous neighbor like that.
Ryan Reynolds reacts
When Pop Crave posted news of Stewart’s comments on X (formerly Twitter), his famous neighbor responded with his signature humor. Ryan Reynolds posted that “I would disagree with her” on the subject of being funny “but I tried that once.” He then joked that Stewart was “surprisingly sharp” and “really closed the gap after about a mile.”
In his gracious response, Ryan Reynolds proved he’s funny in one crucial way: he knows how to take jokes at his expense. As for Stewart’s original comments, they led many Reynolds supporters to point out that the Marvel star has been candid about growing up as an introverted child and later suffering from social anxiety as an adult . So it makes sense that the guy who makes us laugh in all those hit movies isn’t always “hip” and wants to play pranks on his neighbors every time they cross paths.
Speaking of neighbors, the question of whether Ryan Reynolds is funny in real life is a subject that only Martha Stewart seems to care about. The vast majority of the world will never achieve the Deadpool and Wolverine star, so the fact that he can reliably make us laugh with his performances means he’s perfectly funny to us. Where we stand, however, Martha Stewart has her finger on the pulse with at least one thing: Snoop Dogg sounds incredibly fun to hang out with.
