QUALIFICATIONS
Can I apply if I am a trans woman?
Yes, all women can apply for this reporting scholarship.
Is there an age limit?
Anyone aged 18 or over can apply.
I come from one of the 15 countries covered but do not currently live there. Am I eligible for this scholarship?
Reporters must live in one of the reporting countries for the duration of the fellowship.
What educational qualifications do I need to have?
There are no educational requirements for reporting fellows. Higher education, a completed professional certificate or equivalent experience in journalism, communications or a subject related to relevant reporting topics (e.g. political science) is preferred.
What if I don’t have photojournalism experience?
It is not necessary that candidates have previous professional experience in photojournalism. However, successful candidates will have a keen interest in learning photojournalism and ensuring their stories are supported by solid visual resources. Fellows hired will be expected to own or purchase a camera as part of the technical requirements of the program.
What if I speak English but don’t feel comfortable writing in English?
Global Press is a multilingual company with a long-standing commitment to creating opportunities for non-English speaking reporters. For this inaugural fellowship program, we require that all fellows have English proficiency in order to fully participate in the program and communicate with their cohort and editors. Scholarship holders can write news in their national language and be supported by translators and editors.
COMMUNITY EXPERIENCE
When does the fellowship program start?
Selected fellows will be notified by December 20th. The fellowship begins on January 10, 2025.
How many hours per week will I work as a Reporting Fellow?
Reporting Fellows are expected to work full-time, 40 hours per week.
What if I have a job in another newsroom?
This is a full-time scholarship that requires full commitment from participants. From time in training to ongoing learning opportunities to producing investigative reporting for local and international audiences, this fellowship requires full focus.
Will I produce content that focuses on the topic of “democracies in transition”?
Yes, this scholarship is designed to strengthen expertise in understanding changing governments and to examine and explain these changes in the context of your own country and other global trends.
Where will the content I produce be read?
Everything you produce will be published in a Global Press Journal product in English. These products include globalpressjournal.com, our flagship publication, and thematic newsletters sent to a specific audience.
Local language versions of the stories will be made available to local media in your country for republication. The stories are distributed to a wide network of online, print and radio partners around the world.
What technology do I need?
Scholars selected for the program will need a working computer, camera and audio recorder. Global Press will provide all semifinalist candidates with a list of required computer and camera specifications. Scholars who need assistance purchasing technology can apply for a technology grant.
APPLICATION AND INTERVIEW PROCESS
How will I know if I have been selected for the program?
Applicants who advance in the interview will receive an email from Global Press informing them. The final selected scholarship recipients will be notified by December 20th.
Pay and benefits
Is this a paid scholarship?
Fellows receive up to $30,000 per calendar year, paid in monthly installments via bank transfer.
What additional benefits are there during the scholarship?
Global Press provides acute incident support, counseling and ongoing wellness workshops to help fellows navigate some of the risks and challenges inherent in working as a local reporter for an international news organization. During the two-year fellowship, fellows receive a regional benefits package, including time off.
